Halloween Party Oct. 30 and November calendar

Hi Families,
Just a reminder that this week is our Halloween Party! The festivities start at 6:30 and girls are welcome to wear their costumes.
November is shaping up to be a busy month! Here is what’s coming up:
November 6 – Remembrance Day meeting. We’ll be making Valentines for Vets and talking about the importance of Remembrance Day. Also of note: Guides are invited to wear their Guiding Uniforms to school on Remembrance Day.

November 13 – Creative Craft night. Tonight we’ll be finishing off the Creative Craft badge. More weaving, bracelet making, a clay project, and whatever else Jen can come up with!

November 20 – Community Service Night. Tonight we will be making scarves out of polar fleece blankets to donate to Shepherds of Good Hope. We will also be doing a food drive. A speaker will also talk to the Guides about the good work the Shepherds of Good Hope does in our community. ** We would love a couple of parent volunteers for this event, willing to bring a good pair of fabric scissors, a measuring tape/stick and seamstress pins to help the girls with the scarves. If you are interest in joining us, please let Jen know.

November 27 – International Day of the Girl (IDG) Challenge. We were planning to do this in October to celebrate the International Day of the Girl, but time slipped away on us! IDG is an opportunity to bring global focus to girls’ rights, the challenges that girls face in their everyday lives and to empower girls to make a positive difference in the world.

Other key dates

December 5: Les Petits Ballet for those Guides who signed up.
December 6: Manotick Christmas Parade – meet at noon (time TBC) and join us on the Girl Guide float! (riding on the float will be optional, more details to follow)

That’s all for now. Happy Halloween!

Oct. 23 - Enrollment!

Hi Families,

Just a reminder that this week is Enrollment! Parents of girls in their first year of Guides are invited to join us for the ceremony at 7:15pm.  Girls who offered to bring something for the event (treats, plates, presentations) are reminded to do so. The meeting for the girls will begin as usual at 6:30.

A couple of other notes:

For girls who were ordering missing badges, Lisa has them now. She has sent you an email separately about this. They will be available for pick-up on Thursday.

Halloween: Next week we are having a Halloween party! The Guides are invited to wear their costumes (we asked them not to wear anything too scary and to leave any fake weapons/masks at home).

Winter camp: Thanks to those who responded to my camp survey. If your Guide is definitely NOT interested in the winter camp, please let me know asap. We are trying to get an idea of numbers.

Also, a big thanks again for driving your Guides to Manotick on such short notice last week. We can't always help last minute schedule changes and we really appreciate how flexible you have been.

Thanks and see you soon,
Jen

Change of Plans for Oct 16 - please meet at Watson's Mill in Manotick

I apologize for the short notice, but a mix-up with our Guide Store order that we found out about today means that we do not have all of our pins, etc. for enrollment tomorrow night. So, unfortunately we need to postpone enrollment until next week (October 23).

Instead of enrollment, we would like to do our hike in Manotick tomorrow night (October 16) in order to earn our Outdoor in the City badge. We will meet at Watson’s Mill at 6:15. Please dress for the weather (planning to stay outside for an hour and a half), bring a water bottle and flashlight, as well as a compass if you have one.

I have already spoken to some parents, but I would really appreciate it if you could respond to this email so I know you have received it. If you have problems getting to the Mill please let us know that as well and we can see about arranging a ride.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience!

Jen

Enrolment Oct. 16, ballet, other notes

Hi Everyone,

Just a few quick updates this week:

Ballet: We have ballet forms from Hannah, Kadence, Robin, Amy, Reilly, Grace, Madison, Nicole, Fiona, Allison D, Alison C and Cate. If you intended to send a form in last night but forgot, please let us know by end of day today (Friday) – Lisa is ordering tickets this evening if she can.

Campfire on Parliament Hill: As mentioned to parents last night, there is a Girl Guide campfire at the Eternal Flame on Parliament Hill this Wednesday, October 15, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. All guiding ages are welcome. If you are planning to take your Guide(s), please email me by Tuesday the 14th so I have an idea of numbers. Also, please plan to stay for the hour with us. You can meet us right across from Parliament Hill and the Capital Information Kiosk (corner of Metcalfe and Wellington) at about 6:25pm. This is an event where the girls can earn an extra badge for attending.

Enrolment, Thursday October 16: Our first year girls are getting enrolled this week! Parents of first years are invited to join us for a special ceremony at the daycare starting at 7:15pm. Some of the Grade 6 Guides have offered to bring items to enrolment (snacks, etc). If you need a reminder of what to bring, please let me know.

Indoor Shoes: Now that we are getting into the messier weather, please remember to bring indoor shoes to all meetings.

Ending meetings at 8:15pm: We found last night that running the meeting from 6:30 to 8pm was a bit rushed– we miss those extra 15 minutes at the beginning! So, we would like to extend our meeting time so that it ends at 8:15pm rather than 8pm. If you have concerns with this proposal, please let me know.

Thanks very much and Happy Thanksgiving!

Oct. 9 meeting

Hi Families,

Thanks to all who came out cookie selling - it was a beautiful night to be outside. Plus we sold 10 cases!

Our October 9 meeting will be back at the daycare. Please remember that we will now be starting at 6:30 rather than 6:15 due to changes in our permit with the school board. This week we'll be working more on the promise and law and learning how to do knots. We will also be planning for enrollment on the 16th, along with our Halloween party, so it would be great if the Guides could bring some ideas for these events!

Also, please note that we did not collect dues last week. If your Guide can please bring $2.00 this week instead it would be appreciated. We are also going to try and do some badge testing.

Yours in Guiding,
Jen
