Camp and first meeting night information. Also, please email Jen by Aug 25 to confirm email contact information

Dear Families,

It is hard to believe we are almost at the end of summer! Please find attached some important information about the upcoming Guiding year.

Start date and meeting location: Our first meeting will be on Thursday September 11, from 6:15 to 8pm. Unfortunately over the summer the Community Centre decided to use its meeting space on Thursday nights for other events and cancelled our room booking. In the meantime, we have found two alternative meeting locations (Canyon Walk Daycare at Steve MacLean P.S. and St. Jerome Gym, a space that would be shared with Brownies). We are waiting final confirmation as to which space we will be using on a regular basis; I will confirm it with you before our first meeting.

Other general meeting information:

  1. Girls are required to submit a completed H1 form (form is attached) at the first meeting. Unfortunately they are unable to stay at the meeting if this form is not submitted.
  2. The September 18th meeting will be cancelled due to the “Meet the Teachers Night” at Steve MacLean P.S. Regular meetings will resume on September 25th.
  3. For each meeting the girls are asked to bring the following to every meeting: A bag for holding everything; uniform and program book (available for purchase at http://www.thegirlguidestore.ca ); runners (indoor shoes); and dues. Water bottles may also be handy.

Dues:
As a brand new unit, we are low on funds for crafts, etc. and are especially reliant on dues money until we get our proceeds from the first round of cookie sales. Given this is the case, please ensure your Guide brings her $1 for dues every week, including those nights when we are taking a field trip.

Camp:

Planning for our Pioneer Camp, to be held at MacSkimming Outdoor Education centre from Saturday September 27 to Sunday September 28, is well underway! Please see the attached forms for information. While all camps are optional, we do highly recommend your Guide attend this event (or at least part of it, however please note the cost is fixed at $50 for all participants), as we will be working on many badge areas throughout the weekend. Please return camp forms and payment at our first meeting on September 11. Cash is acceptable, or cheques can be made out to Girl Guides of Canada.

Badges we will work on as a Unit: As mentioned previously, we are planning to work primarily on the Discovering You program area, but will also be covering off sections of You and Others and Beyond You. To do this, we are planning to work on several badges as a group, including:

- Home heritage skills, heritage, provincial/territorial heritage, folklore (fall camp)

- Event planning

- Creative crafts

- Needlework

- Reporting

- Inventing

- High on life

- Interpreting

- Outdoors in the city

- Snowshoeing (subject to snowshoe availability at winter camp)

- Design your own badge

- Dancing

- Recycling

More badges or challenge crests will be added as we discuss what else the girls would like to cover as a group. We will also have badge testing opportunities throughout the year. If your Guide would like to work on a badge but is unsure if we’ll cover it as a group, please do not hesitate to ask.
Blog: We have a blog: www.4thriversidesouthguides.blogspot.ca. We will try to update it each week by Tuesday evening, so please remember to check it before every Thursday meeting. The blog will be our main way of providing updates to parents, however permission forms will be sent to you via email. If you are new to this mailing list, please check the blog for copies of all previous emails.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. We are looking forward to a great Guiding year!!
Yours in Guiding,
Jen C., Alice and Lisa
