Camp, some badge info, etc.

Dear Families,

Thanks to all of you who provided feedback to our last email. The badge information was quite helpful: based on what we we’ve learned, we have decided to focus primarily on the Discovering You program area, as well as on sections of You and Others and Beyond You. (Yes, we have a very ambitious year ahead of us!) Our program will focus on completing a series the interest badges that cover the program requirements in these areas. We hope to have a complete list of badges we intend to work on as a group to you by the end of the summer. In the meantime, if your Guide shows interest in working on some badges this year, you are more than welcome to email us the name of it and we’ll tell you if we are likely to work on it as a unit.

On that note, heading to the Experimental Farm any time soon? See your email for a booklet that will allow your Guide to earn the farming badge!

Other key points to note:

Camp: We are heading to MacSkimming Pioneer Camp in Cumberland for a campout on September 27. We’ll arrive at 8am Saturday September 27 and stay until noon on the 28th. We will be staying indoors for this camp in one of the larger pioneer buildings, and we will spend the time working on some of the heritage-themed badges, part of the tasty treat badge, as well as fulfilling requirements for some of the outdoor and camping badges. Cost will be $50 per girl (includes HST). More details will follow shortly. **Please confirm to me (Jen) if your Guide would like to attend, or would definitely not attend, so we can get an idea of numbers. There will also be a winter camp this year at Camp Woolsey, January 16-18 (we’ll be sleeping indoors again).

Old school supplies: Don’t know what to do with all the old school supplies coming home next week? We’d take them! We are particularly looking for pencil crayons, pencil sharpeners, scissors, paper and glue sticks for our unit’s craft bins if you have any you wish to donate.

Old fleece blankets: This fall we’ll be making fleece scarves to donate to homeless shelters and/or the snowsuit fund. If you have any old fleece blankets or leftover polar fleece from sewing projects that you would like to donate, that would be great!

That’s it for now; please remember to check out our blog, http://4thriversidesouthguides.blogspot.ca/ , where you can find all of our emails, as well as other Guiding-related information. We have begun to post information about the Lady Baden Powell challenge and will post other background information throughout the summer.

Yours in Guiding,
Jen, Alice and Lisa

Lady Baden Powell Challenge

Hi Families,

We will be posting more about the Lady Baden Powell Challenge - the highest award that Girl Guides can earn - over the next few weeks. Some of the work will be done in our unit, but Guides wishing to complete this challenge will need to do independent work as well.

In addition to the link on the right to a program booklet about the Challenge, please find some ideas for various independent requirements below. More information is also provided in the Girl Guide handbook.

Some Suggestions for Lady Baden Powell Award Service Projects

Activity #3 – Project to help your Guide Unit
  • Maintain the patrol boxes for your unit
  • Make a book of favourite campfire songs
  • Create a game or activity to teach the rest of your unit something about Guiding (such as a game on how to remember the Laws)
  • Assemble a book of games that the unit enjoys playing
  • Develop a Memory Book for the unit (be sure to include photos of your favourite  activities)
Activity  #4 – Major Community Service Project (at least six hours)

  • Book Drive for a local school/daycare centre
  • Making Baby Bundles for new moms
  • Gift wrapping at a seniors home
  • Making scarves/toques for homeless shelter
  • Manning a Guiding PR booth at a community activity (Canada Day, Winterlude...Leaders receive requests for aid and can forward along information if there is interest)
Activity #6 – Community Activity (at least six hours)
  • Create an activity booklet for brownies or sparks to teach them a skill (such as fire safety)
  • Making emergency preparedness kits for those in need of them (work with the Provincial Emergency Program or Fire Dept)
  • Expand on other Community Service activities your Unit works on
Any questions? Please do not hesitate to ask!
