Camp forms due this week; please bring neck scarf

Hello Families!

This week we will be working more on the You in Guiding program area. Please have your Guide bring her neck scarf to the meeting (even if she is not officially allowed to wear it yet). We will be practicing tying our knots, as well as doing a few other fun games and crafts.

Just a reminder that camp forms are due this week. It is going to be a great camp! The leaders are already busy planning some great Harry Potter-themed events.

Also, cookies are still available if you are interested in more cases or have not yet picked up your first case. Guider Pony (Jenn Raponi) will have cases for pick up again this week.

Upcoming events:

October 5 – Camp skills night

October 12 – regular meeting cancelled

October 13-15 – CAMP WOOLSEY!

October 18 – Optional community campfire, 7 to 8pm in Manotick (directions/details to follow – please let Jen C know if you plan to send your Guide to the event)

October 19 – Night hike in Manotick (Outdoors in the City badge – rain or shine event)

October 26 – WAGGGS fun, practicing for Enrollment

November 2 – Enrollment!

See you soon,
Jen

First meeting is this week!

Our first meeting is this week! We start at 6:30pm, and if the weather keeps up like this, we will likely spend part of our meeting outside in the schoolyard.

The post below indicates what the Guides should bring the first night. As well, we will also have cookies available for pick-up. Each Guide has one case of cookies to sell, but if they would like more, please see Jenn Raponi (Guider Pony). If possible, please bring a cheque for the first case made out to the Girl Guides of Canada. Just over $11.00 from each case of cookies goes towards activities, crafts and badges for the girls.
Check out the right-hand column of this page for a list of upcoming activities!

Finally, forms for our Harry Potter Camp at Camp Woolsey are due September 28 (forms were sent by email – please let me know if you need them again). If you know for sure this week that your Guide cannot attend, could you please let me know? We are trying to get an idea of numbers.

Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you this week!

2017-18 Guiding Year - General Information

Dear Families,

Welcome (back!) to the 4th Riverside South Guides. This email contains some important information about the upcoming Guiding year, so please respond that you have received it (and to confirm I have the right email address). The leaders are all very excited to get started!

Start date and meeting location: Our first meeting will be on Thursday September 21, from 6:30 to 8:15pm. Unless otherwise specified, our meetings will be held at Canyon Walk Daycare, which is attached to Steve Maclean Public School. The entrance to the daycare is off Goldeneye Way.

Other general meeting information:

  1. Guides are required to submit a completed H1 form (sent via email) at the first meeting. Unfortunately, the girls are unable to stay at the meeting if this form is not submitted.
  2. For every meeting, Guides are asked to wear their uniform – shirt, sash, scarf. They should also bring their program book (all items are available for purchase at http://www.thegirlguidestore.ca) and indoor shoes (preferably runners). Dark bottoms should also be worn with the uniform shirt, and water bottles may also be handy.
  3. Please ensure your Guide arrives for the meeting at 6:30pm so that we can get started on time. Girls should also be picked up promptly at 8:15pm, as the custodian needs to clean the room after we leave.
  4. Please check our unit’s blog (http://4thriversidesouthguides.blogspot.ca/) for regular updates.

Dues:

This year we will be collecting dues at the beginning of the year.  Please send $35 (cash or cheque payable to Girl Guides of Canada) with your Guide. As the Guide unit only receives a small portion of the Girl Guide registration fee, these dues and the unit’s profits from cookie sales pay for crafts, badges, crests, etc. for your daughter for the year.

Badges:

Most of our meetings will be spent doing badge work and special challenges. While we will generally focus on badges from the program areas we are covering this year --You in Guiding and Discovering You, we will also add some others as we discuss programming interests with the Guides. If your Guide would like to work on a badge but is unsure if we’ll cover it as a group, please do not hesitate to have her ask us about it. We are also more than happy to do badge testing during the year; please just have your Guide mention it the week before she’d like to be tested so that we can book some time at the following meeting. Also, if your Guide attended a Guide camp this summer (e.g. Camp Woolsey), please send in her badge tracking pamphlet so we can make sure she gets the badges she earned. Finally, some badge credits can be awarded for achieving a certain swimming level, participating in bicycle safety days at school, etc. – feel free to ask about these.

Camps:

We like to offer a variety of camps on weekends for our Guides during the year. While they are optional, we do encourage the Guides to attend when possible, as they provide with excellent opportunities to get out and enjoy nature and work on our camping (and other) badges. More information about our Fall camp at Camp Woolsey, October 13 to 15, 2017, will be circulated in a few weeks.

Community Service for Lady Baden Powell Challenge:

Guides have an option to earn the Lady Baden Powell Challenge during their years at Guides (it normally takes three years to complete the Challenge). While we do cover some of the requirements in our group with our other badges, others such as additional community service work must be done by the Guides on their own time.  Examples of extra community service include helping around their school as a lunch monitor or participating in a kindness or environmental club, tree planting, volunteering with Churches or other community organizations, and attending community clean-up activities. Girls will be asked early in the Guiding year to start tracking this extra time if they are interested in earning this special Challenge.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. We are looking forward to a great Guiding year!

Yours in Guiding,

Jen Collins (Contact Guider), Jenn Raponi (Cookie Coordinator), Janice Villeneuve, Mary Robotham, Becca Mann and Lisa Dorman (Treasurer)

November 24 - Make a Difference! - and upcoming events

Hi Families,

This week’s meeting will focus again on community service work – we will fill our Make a Difference bags (donations are definitely welcome, please see the previous blog post for details) and we will be making cat beds for the Ottawa Humane Society. Drop-off for the meeting is 6:30pm and pick-up is at 8:15pm.

Please remind your Guides that, unless specified, they need to attend our meetings in full uniform (Guide shirt, necker, and sash, plus dark pants or skirt). They should also bring indoor shoes. We have informed the girls that only patrols that have all members in full uniform will be able to carry the flag in our opening horseshoe.

Also, I am emailed a handy camp skills handbook that you may wish to print for your Guide. We went through some of the items in it last week and it is a very handy reference for the girls to have.

Upcoming events and other notes

Dec 1: more general badge work to cover off some programming requirements and practice for our Sing Ontario Sing night with the brownies.

Dec 2 – 4: Camp Woolsey for those attending. *Please remind your Guide she needs to pack her own belongings as part of the camper badge requirements.

Dec 8: Sing Ontario Sing challenge with the 2nd Riverside South Brownies. We will meet from 6pm to 7:30pm at St. Jerome School for this meeting.

Dec 15: we are making winter hats and playing some games

Dec 22: Christmas Party!

Dec 29 and Jan 5: No meeting

Thank you,

Jen

Make a Difference Bags-November 24

Hello families! My name is Alison. I am first year pathfinder. I am also Guider Jen’s daughter and I am doing a project that I would very much like your daughters to help me with. I am doing make a difference bags. They are reusable bags filled with the most needed items from shelters. In my case I will be donating them to Cornerstone’s Women’s Shelter. If you would like to learn more about them you can visit http://www.ottawa.anglican.ca/cornerstone/index.html. I will be coming in to talk to the girls on November 10, 2016 and we will be making the bags on November 24, 2016. I will be bringing a collection box between the 17th and the 24th so if you have any donations, please drop them off in the box. Donations will be greatly appreciated!!

Most needed items include:
  • New toiletries
  • Recreational items such as puzzles, knitting needles, colouring books, pencils & markers or yarn
  • Craft supplies such as watercolour paper, construction paper, multi-use paper, acrylic paint, white glue, sharpies or clay
  • Re-usable bags

Thank you for your help!
